Pride and Prejudice
Which movie will be the best version of Jane Austen's classic?
In the newest:
Keira Knightley (Pirates of the Caribbean) plays Elizabeth
Matthew Macfadyen play Mr. Darcy--no idea who he is. He's blurry anyway. LOL.
I look forward to seeing this new version, but how could it possibly replace the A & E version with Colin Firth?
Just before he takes a swim.
Okay, somewhere in there is Jennifer Ehle as well.
But what about the original?
With Laurence Olivier and Greer Garson.
Well, probably I'm the only AG girl who loves P & P. I just LOVE IT! The book and the movies. I thought no movie could replace the version with Olivier and Greer Garson. But, I was wrong. The A & E version followed the book almost word for word and was terrific! At first, when I heard there was a new version with Keira Knightly, I though NO! But, I will go with an open mind, because Jane Austen in any form is still the greatest. *Sigh* Can't wait. Maybe I'll wait for my mom to come (Dec 7th) and we'll have a girl's night out at the movies.

I've never read or seen it, if you can believe that. This past year it has gotten a lot of "recognition" (for lack of a better word) in events in my life so I'm going to have to break down and read it and then see it (I think it's important to do it in that order, if possible).
And in case you were wondering what "events"...I went to a writing session where the speaker went on and on about how Jane Austen did this and that and I had no idea what she was talking about. I took an online class where one of the areas studied was based on P&P. It's come up in monthly book nominations and now a new movie, that I've been invited to TWICE to go see (unfortunately the viewings are taking place during business hours so I can't go).
So anyway, hope you enjoy the new movie. I've heard it's really good.

Read next to today's romances, it might seem boring or insipid. But for its time, it was refreshingly honest about the flaws of social classes and of the hero and heroine as well. Its message was about morality and a person's character. It is a person's actions in life that count, not how they appear to others. (Darcy appears to be a jerk, while other men appear to be wonderful--when perhaps the opposite is true).
In college, I had several professors (Philosophy, religion, and English classes)use this movie when discussing ethics. Several male authors, like Mark Twain, praise it for the same reason--its honesty and character value. Virginia Woolf, who was anything but insipid, loved Austen's work.
I say all that, because it might seem like a dull story to us in present time, but there is something very special about it. And yes, I would recommend the book first (although A & E is so close).
Enjoy!

I've never heard of anyone not loving P&P - ever. It's on my list of books to read. The plan is to read it while I'm on my Christmas break (Dec 21 - Jan 3).

Never seen it, never read it and really have no urge to.
Sad, isn't it?
But then, I've not read many of the classics.
Although I loved Uncle Tom's Cabin.
Enjoy the film, Ellen. Bet you'll have a blast. :D
